Before Testing -- State Testing

Prepare the Testing Room

  • Remove or cover all visual aids (posters, charts, word walls).

  • Arrange seating to prevent cheating—all seats must face the same direction and students must be adequately spaced.

Prepare and Organize Materials

  • Receive and account for secure materials from the School Assessment Coordinator:

    • Test tickets

    • Scratch paper, work folders, worksheets

    • Seating chart

    • Security log

    • Administration record

  • Double-check your materials and store them securely until testing begins.

  • Post required signs

    • Electronic Devices Prohibited

    • No Calculators (if applicable)

  • You may lay out scratch paper/work folders/worksheets and pencils, but do not put out test tickets in advance.

Admit Students

  • Verify students' identity before admitting them to the testing room. You can do this by sight (if you know the student) or by asking the student for their name or ID number and checking it against your roster. Do not allow students to point to their name on your roster.

  • Randomly direct students to a seat. They should not be seated in alphabetical order.

Collect student cell phones and other prohibited electronics.

  • Students must power off their cell phones and other prohibited devices (ear buds, smart watches, smart glasses, and other smart devices).

  • These devices must be labeled with the student name and collected separate from student backpacks.

  • You may use your discretion in how you collect these items -- sticky notes with plastic bags or rubber bands (please do not use sticky alone because they fall off), basket, box, etc. If you prefer, you may pick up paper bags from the test coordinator for storing student phones during testing.

  • Please be mindful that students may try to hide prohibited devices under long sleeves, in their pockets, or in their ears. Students may not have prohibited devices anywhere on their person, even if the devices are powered off.

Collect Student Backpacks

  • Designate a space in your classroom for students to place their backpacks and other belongings.

  • This space must be out of students' reach.

  • Students are not allowed to keep backpacks at their seats or anywhere near their persons while testing.
